Rebuilt from the studs, keeping the midcentury bones

In September 2026 we took this midcentury house down to the studs and rebuilt it: new siding, new systems, new floors, a new kitchen and new baths. We kept what made it midcentury in the first place: vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, the breeze-block entry courtyard, the black brick fireplace and walls of glass onto the garden.

The kitchen is built around a quartz island with waterfall edges, sage-and-walnut cabinets and all-new Whirlpool and Bosch appliances. There are two living areas, so the group can spread out: a media lounge with a 75" smart TV, and a sitting area by the original fireplace with a 55" Samsung Frame TV. Complimentary YouTube TV is on every TV, and smart lighting and speakers run through the house.

The garden

This is what people remember

The cactus and succulent garden was created by the home's original owner, Jim Stalsonburg, Balboa Park's 1960s landscape architect. Curved stone paths wind through a fully fenced third of an acre of barrel cactus, agave and old trees, and after sunset color-changing lights thread through all of it.

FAQ

Questions guests ask

Is it good for kids?

Yes. The bunk room sleeps 5 and is the kids' favorite. There's a crib, pack 'n play, high chair, baby bath, baby monitor and kids' dinnerware, the house is all one level, and the backyard is fully fenced with lawn and cornhole. Keep an eye on little hands near the cactus spines, and an adult needs to be with children at the hot tub and sauna.

Where do we park? Is there EV charging?

There's ample street parking, plus the garage with an EV charger. The garage key is waiting inside when you arrive.

Can we host a wedding party or gathering?

The house works well for everything from a family dinner to a wedding welcome party or reunion weekend. Any on-site party or reception needs our written approval before you book, so text us first with your plans and headcount.

Can I work from here?

There's a dedicated workspace with a garden view in Bedroom 3, and Wifi throughout. The breakfast nook and the covered outdoor room make good second offices.

Can we bring a pet?

Ask us before you book and we'll let you know.

How does check-in work?

Self check-in from 4 PM. Your door code arrives by message the day before you arrive, along with the house guide covering Wi-Fi, the sauna, garden lights and everything else.

Is there laundry?

A washer and dryer are in the garage, with detergent and dryer sheets provided.
